I am very proud to be leading Porth County Community. Here, our first priority will always be our students' development providing a positive, caring, challenging and successful environment.

Porth County Community School is an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school of approximately 1000 students that serves the town of Porth and nearby villages situated in the Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach. The catchment area covers the greater part of the lower Rhondda Valleys and contains eight feeder schools: Aberllechau, Alaw, Cymmer, Hafod, Pontygwaith, Porth, Trealaw and Ynyshir. With exercise of increased powers of parental choice we have a number of students from outside the area. The school is housed in mainly modern buildings, built to high specifications, on a large, well-appointed site. There is a heated swimming pool and covered games area for physical education and an all-weather floodlit playing surface. Extensive use of the facilities are made by the community including, adult education evening classes and use of the sports facilities by local sports teams.

The last inspection report (19th October 2009) stated that Porth County Community School is a very good school with outstanding features in the quality of education it provides and in the effectiveness of its leadership and management.  The school provides a wide range of relevant and often innovative learning experiences for pupils and students. A particular strength of the school identified by ESTYN is its strong partnership with the community it serves.

In the last few years the school has achieved Investors in People Award, Investors in Families Award, annual accreditation for Progress Files, Basic Skills Kite Mark Award, Careers Wales Continuous Improvement, Work Related Quality Kite Mark, Healthy Schools Quality Award, Active Sports Mark Award, Community Schools Continue-You National Award, Education Extra Award, NOF funding for out of hours learning and for the last three successive years Heritage Lottery Awards.

The school offers the Welsh Baccalaureate for all students at Key Stage 4 and 5 at both Intermediate and Advanced Level. The school works in collaboration with the Rhondda Valleys Consortium to offer a wide range of Post 16 Courses. In association with the local community we have established an exciting, enriching extra curricular programme that extends the school day for students, this is known as ‘E3+’. This is managed by community members and has charitable status.

The school aims to give all students the best opportunity to demonstrate their potential within a caring environment. Porth County has a broad curriculum to match the demands and needs of all of its students whilst providing strong pastoral support to maximize each student’s potential.

"Our first priority will always be ensuring our pupils have a positive, caring, challenging and successful environment to allow them to develop."
